As the tablecloth begins to wobble, and is about to take off, it shows … that there is no table below. As if it never existed. Phantom … ”As if emanating from the same album as Boccioni’s unique forms of continuity in space, or a blown gown torn from the iconic wind of Marilyn Monroe, a ghost table captured an object in motion. It is an investigation of form that spontaneously clarifies the relationship between activity and design. The idea is to minimize the importance of the table and shift the focus to the people sitting around. Design tries to express a lack of design. This directs attention to the activity around the table. The skin is devoid of structural support but becomes its own structure. This interpretation of mass and space through the negation of gravity creates a tangible manifestation of the intended shape and emphasizes its mutability. The table, made from a composite fiberglass material, which is only six millimeters thick and is able to extend over considerable lengths, was designed by Fabric Architects. Exclusively designed for Stilwerk, the Phantom has been featured in numerous exhibitions including Design Miami 2010.
